This report, describing new prison intake into the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction for 1992, is designed to provide a database which will allow the development of strategies for dealing with an increasing institutional population, to provide data to accurately test proposals to relieve prison crowding, to allow responses to inquiries regarding the institutionalized population, to interact with other agency decisionmakers, and to assess the potential for expanding optional sanctions for offenders committed to prison.
Abstract
The data for this study were obtained on the 3,350 inmates received into the Ohio prison system between April 15, 1992 and June 12, 1992; pre- or postsentence reports were prepared for all these inmates. In the first section of the report, the findings of the 1992 intake study are presented in relation to demographic and social characteristics, details of current offense and sentence, and criminal history. The characteristics of six specific subgroups of new inmates (third- and fourth-degree felons; drug traffickers; drug abusers; property offenders; second-, third-, and fourth-degree burglars; and inmates with no prior prison terms) who might be appropriate candidates for nonprison alternative sanctions are discussed. The third section presents a profile of intake from the 14 Ohio counties which have usually accounted for the largest proportions of prison intake. The final section examines characteristics of clients served by several community alternative programs supported by the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. 60 tables
