This report describes the new prisoners admitted into the Ohio prison system in 1992.
Abstract
This is the first study of the Ohio prison population undertaken since 1985. Demographic and social data about new inmates entering the system as well as details about their current offenses, sentences and criminal backgrounds was collected to aid in the formidable task of managing the increasingly overcrowded prisons under the jurisdiction of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections. Data was collected on prison intake between April 15, 1992 and June 12, 1992. During that period, 3,350 new prisoners entered the system. It is believed that the information obtained can be generalized as to the annual intake. The sources of data were the MAPPER admission system, a computer- based tracking system, presentence investigations or post sentence reports which were prepared for all prisoners admitted during the data collection period. Another task undertaken by the study was to examine subgroups of prisoners and to identify groups that might be appropriate candidates for nonprison sanctions. A profile of offenders entering the Ohio prison system from the State's 14 largest counties is also provided. Finally, the report looks at the characteristics of offenders who were diverted from prison to community sanction programs. Tables
