'INTRODUCTION TO ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE,' AN INTRODUCTORY COURSE IN CRIME PREVENTION OFFERED AT SACRAMENTO (CALIF.) CITY COLLEGE, IS DESCRIBED.
Abstract
MOST COLLEGES OFFERING ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE EDUCATION PROGRAMS INCLUDE A GENERAL INTRODUCTION OR SURVEY COURSE WHICH CAN PROVIDE AN IDEAL OPPORTUNITY TO INITIATE AND REINFORCE CONCEPTS OF CRIME PREVENTION. AS A PART OF THE COURSE OF INSTRUCTION IN 'INTRODUCTION TO ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE,' ARRANGEMENTS ARE MADE WITH THE SACRAMENTO COUNTY SHERIFFS' DEPARTMENT FOR AN ONCAMPUS VISIT OF THE SHERIFFS' MOBILE CRIME PREVENTION SHOW ON WHEELS. THIS SHOW CONSISTS OF A MOTORHOME SPECIALLY EQUIPPED WITH DISPLAYS OF LOCKS, LOCKING DEVICES, TYPES OF ALARM SYSTEMS, AND ILLUSTRATIONS OF HOME-SECURITY TECHNIQUES. PERSONNEL FROM A SHERIFF'S OFFICE ALSO PRESENT AN OVERVIEW OF CRIME PREVENTION TO THE STUDENTS. TOPICS COVERED INCLUDE SECURITY CONSCIOUSNESS; NEIGHBORHOOD INVOLVEMENT IN REDUCING THE INCIDENCE OF RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY; OPERATION IDENTIFICATION (I.E., ENGRAVING IDENTIFICATION ON HOMEOWNER POSSESSIONS TO HINDER RESALE BY THIEVES); TARGET HARDENING; AND PERSONAL SECURITY. IN ADDITION, A NUMBER OF FILMS ARE USED DEALING WITH CRIME-PREVENTION ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH PARTICULAR CRIMES. A FILM CURRENTLY IN PRODUCTION WILL FEATURE A NATIONAL CRIME PREVENTION TEST DESIGNED TO STIMULATE STUDENT PARTICIPATION AND INTERACTION. THE CRIME-PREVENTION INFORMATION IS PERSONALIZED BY GIVING THE STUDENTS AN OUT-OF-CLASS ASSIGNMENT. THE ASSIGNMENT INVOLVES THE STUDENT IN THE CONDUCT OF A PERSONAL CRIME-VICTIMIZATION VULNERABILITY INVENTORY, IMPLEMENTING A CORRECTIVE PLAN, AND AN INTERVIEW/DISCUSSION WITH A NEIGHBOR ON THE SUBJECT OF CRIME PREVENTION. THE FORMAT OF EACH OF THESE ACTIVITIES IS DESCRIBED. NO REFERENCES ARE INCLUDED. (RCB)
