A survey distributed to all schools in Los Angeles County (Calif.) in 1989 sought to determine the level of interethnic conflict and hate crime in schools serving kindergarten through grades 12.
Abstract
Of the 1,570 surveys distributed, 956 (61 percent) were returned. Of these, 354 schools responded that they had incidents of hate crime, and 602 reported that they had not. Results indicated that incidents directed against Hispanic students were more frequent than incidents directed against whites. Whites were the next most frequent target of incidents; immigrant students were also at substantial risk. In addition, about half the anti-Asian incidents and one-third of the anti-Hispanic incidents were directed against immigrants. Homosexual and Jewish students also accounted for a significant number of victims. Differences also existed between incidents directed against school employees and those directed against students.
