In 1992, the British Columbia Interministry Committee on Criminal Gangs (IMCGC) formulated a revised action plan, based on results of a series of community and agency consultations.
Abstract
The IMCGC is responsible for identifying gang problems, proposing solutions, facilitating coordinated responses, and assessing results. The ultimate goals of the IMCGC are to divert young people from involvement in gangs and to reduce the incidence of criminal gang activity, particularly violent crime. The efforts proposed here target youths at risk, young gangs, and criminal gangs through a variety of strategies ranging from community partnership and youth involvement to prevention and intervention, opportunities provision, law enforcement, and organizational development. This report summarizes the activities of existing programs which focus on a safe school environment, positive choices, research, police- community relations, and enforcement.
