Abstract
Regarding UNODC efforts to counter transnational organized crime, the report first describes activities of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime. This is followed by a summary of efforts to promote ratification and implementation of this Convention. This summary addresses the implementation of the provisions on international cooperation, as well as associated technical assistance activities. The report's section on transnational organized crime also describes efforts in promoting the ratification and implementation of the Protocols to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime. These include a Protocol to Prevent, Suppress, and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children; the Protocol against the Smuggling of Migrants by Land, Sea, and Air; and the Protocol against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, Their Parts and Components, and Ammunition. In addition the report's section on Transnational Crime indicates what is being done to strengthen international cooperation in combating transnational organized crime. In addition to Transnational Crime, a major section of the report focuses on corruption, which pertains to violations of standards of integrity in the operation of state institutions. The activities reviewed address the mechanism for the review of implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption, the working groups on the prevention of corruption and asset recovery, and the meeting of experts on international cooperation in implementing the Convention. Efforts in promoting ratification and implementation of the Convention are also reviewed.
