This report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), which was submitted to the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (the Commission) at its 22nd session, addresses the UNODC's efforts in countering transnational organized crime and the corruption of government institutions.
Abstract
The UNODC offers recommendations to the Commission regarding transnational organized crime and the corruption of government institutions. They pertain to the encouragement of member states to ratify or accede to the Organized Crime Convention and its Protocols as well as to the Convention against Corruption. The recommendations also address the need for financial support for activities related to the implementation of these two Conventions. The UNODC's report on its activities related to transnational organized crime pertain to the Conference of the Parties to the Convention against Transnational Organized Crime; the promotion of the ratification and implementation of this Convention; and the promotion of the ratification and implementation of the Protocols to the Convention. These Protocols focus on the prevention, suppression, and punishment of trafficking in persons, especially women and children; the smuggling of migrants; and the illicit manufacturing of and trafficking in firearms, their parts and components, and ammunition. Also reported are UNODC's activities in strengthening international cooperation in combating transnational organized crime. Activities of the UNODC related to the corruption of government institutions have focused on the Conference of the States Parties to the Convention against Corruption. Specific activities mentioned pertain to the mechanism for the review of the implementation of the Convention; the activities of working groups on the prevention of corruption and asset recovery; and the meeting of experts to improve international cooperation under the Convention. Other UNODC activities related to the Convention against Corruption relate to promoting ratification and implementation of the Convention.
