IRISH SPEAKER GIVES A BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND ON THE ORGANIZATION AND FORMATION OF THE IRISH POLICE FORCE.
Abstract
EVER SINCE IRISH INDEPENDENCE FROM THE CROWN IN 1922, THE POLICE FORCE HAS BEEN UNARMED. THIS HAS WORKED OUT WELL, ACCORDING TO THE SPEAKER. THERE ARE SOME 18,500 POLICE IN IRELAND, MAINLY A RURAL COUNTRY WHERE CRIME IS NOW FLOURISHING. IT IS IMPORTANT FOR THE POLICE TO BE SEEN AS PART OF THE VILLAGE BY THE VILLAGERS THEMSELVES. THE SPEAKER ALSO GAVE HIS VIEWS ON THE ROLE OF THE POLICE: TRADITIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT VS. SOCIAL SERVICE. FOR RELATED INFORMATION SEE NCJ-40544-46 AND 40548....BDS
