In response to a 240-percent increase in crime rates in the past 20 years, a number of law enforcement initiatives have been implemented in Denmark.
Abstract
These initiatives emphasize creativity and goal- and problem-oriented responses to crime. The Crime Prevention Council, established in 1971, works toward crime prevention through information dissemination, technical assistance, and implementation of both traditional and socially oriented crime-prevention projects. One of these projects has been the establishment of local liaison committees, composed of representatives from social and health agencies, schools, and police, in almost every municipality. This interagency approach ensures coordination, cooperation, and effective crime prevention and provides an omnibus perspective for program evaluation. Another initiative has focused on community policing and improved police-community relations. Establishment of neighborhood police stations has resulted in greater police visibility, enhanced police-citizen interactions, reduced crime and increased public safety, and more proactive casework. A series of pilot projects in computerized burglary investigation has made it possible to identify stolen property, find crime scenes, delineate modi operandi, and compare evidence, thus producing more coordinated investigation. Other projects have focused on specific types of thefts and crime patterns in specific geographic areas.
