THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THIS SEMINAR WAS AN INTENSIVE CROSS-CULTURAL ANALYTICAL AND COMPARATIVE EXPLORATION OF DRUG USE AS A SOCIAL PHENOMENON CULTURALLY LINKED WITH CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR.
Abstract
THIS REPORT IS A SYNOPSIS OF THE PAPERS PRESENTED BY THE 15 SEMINAR PARTICIPANTS (EIGHT FROM FOREIGN COUNTRIES AND SEVEN FROM THE UNITED STATES) ON THE CULTURAL FACTORS IN DRUG ABUSE AND DRUG ABUSE RELATED CRIMINALITY. THE MAJOR ISSUES ANALYZED INCLUDED THE VALUE OF CROSS-CULTURAL INTERPRETATIONS OF ETIOLOGIES IN DRUG ADDICTION, THE DIFFICULTY IN DEFINING 'DRUG ADDICTION', 'MISUSE, ETC., THE NEED FOR BOTH CURRENT AND HISTORICAL DATA ON THE DRUG USING POPULATION, THE EFFECT OF REPRESSION ON THE MISUSE OF DRUGS, AND ETIOLOGICAL THEORIES OF DRUG ADDICTION. THE COUNTRIES REPRESENTED AT THE SEMINAR INCLUDED CANADA, FRANCE, GREAT BRITAIN, ITALY, NIGERIA, PUERTO RICO, AND THE UNITED STATES. THE APPENDIX CONTAINS A LIST OF PARTICIPANTS, THE WORKSHOP AGENDA, AND A SAMPLE LETTER OF INVITATION TO THE WORKSHOP.
