A SUPPLEMENTARY CHRONOLOGICAL LISTING OF 166 INCIDENTS OF INTERNATIONAL TERRORISM, OCCURRING FROM JANUARY 1968 THROUGH DECEMBER 1974, IS PRESENTED.
Abstract
OF THESE ACTS, 57 SUPPLEMENT AN EARLIER REPORT ON INTERNATIONAL TERRORISM FROM JANUARY 1968 THROUGH APRIL 1974, WHILE THE REMAINING 109 EVENTS OCCURRED DURING THE LATER MONTHS OF 1974. ACTS REPORTED INCLUDE BOMBING, HIJACKINGS, KIDNAPING, ARSON, AND ASSASSINATION. INTERNAL ACTS OF TERRORISM, SUCH AS THOSE OF THE IRISH REPUBLICAN ARMY (IRA) WITHIN NORTHERN IRELAND, ARE NOT REPORTED. INCIDENTS ARE LISTED BY DATE WITH A BRIEF DESCRIPTION DETAILING THE COUNTRY OF OCCURRENCE, THE TYPE OF INCIDENT, THE GROUP OR INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBLE, AND THE DAMAGE CAUSED AND/OR OUTCOME. TERRORIST INCIDENTS ARISING FROM THE MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT, THE CONFLICT IN NORTHERN IRELAND, AND THE POLITICAL STRUGGLES IN ARGENTINA CONSTITUTE A LARGE PROPORTION OF THE INCIDENTS REPORTED. THE INCIDENTS INCLUDED RANGE FROM THE BOMB-RELATED CRASH OF A TRANS WORLD AIRLINES JET IN WHICH 88 PERSONS WERE KILLED TO UNSUCCESSFUL BOMBING ATTEMPTS IN WHICH NO DAMAGE OR INJURY WAS SUSTAINED. ALSO PROVIDED IS AN INDEX OF TERRORIST GROUPS FREQUENTLY APPEARING IN THE CHRONOLOGY WHICH LISTS THE GROUP ACRONYM OR NAME, THE COMPLETE NAME, AND THE COUNTRY OF ORIGIN. INCLUDED ARE SUCH GROUPS AS AL FATAH, THE BAADER-MEINHOF GANG, THE PALESTINE LIBERATION ARMY (PLA), THE PALESTINE LIBERATION ORGANIZATION (PLO), AND THE MOVIMIENTO ARGENTINO NACIONAL ORGANIZACION (MANO). A GRAPHIC REPRESENTATION OF INCIDENTS FOR 1968 THROUGH 1974 INDICATES PEAKS OF INTERNATIONAL TERRORIST ACTIVITY IN MID-1969 AND MID-1972. ALTHOUGH SLIGHTLY FEWER FEWER INCIDENTS ARE RECORDED FOR 1973 THAN FOR 1974, THE NUMBER OF KILLED, INJURED, OR WOUNDED IN 1974 WAS GREATER THAN FOR ANY OTHER PREVIOUS YEAR FOR WHICH DATA HAVE BEEN COLLECTED.
