Abstract
FOLLOWING INTRODUCTORY ARTICLES ON INTERNATIONAL TERRORISM AND TRENDS IN TRANSNATIONAL TERRORISM, VARIOUS ASPECTS OF INTERNATIONAL TERROR ARE EXAMINED WITHIN SEVERAL BROAD CATEGORIES. TERROR IN SELECTED PARTS OF THE WORLD IS EXAMINED, INCLUDING UNREST IN NORTHERN IRELAND, ANTITERROR LEGISLATION IN SWEDEN, THE PRICE OF TERROR IN SOVIET RUSSIA, STUDENT MOVEMENTS IN JAPAN AND THE U.S. DURING THE 1960'S, AND TERROR IN CENTRAL AMERICA, THE MIDDLE EAST, AFRICA, AND GERMANY. PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECTS CONSIDERED INCLUDE THE PSYCHOHISTORICAL STUDY OF TERRORISM, TERRORISM AND VIOLENCE IN LIGHT OF THEORIES ON DISCONTENT AND FRUSTRATION, AND SADISM AND PARANOIA. TERRORISM'S POLITICAL CONSEQUENCES ARE ENUMERATED, WITH ATTENTION TO POLICE TERROR, HOSTAGE SURVIVAL, THE ROLE OF THE MEDIA, TERRORISM AND THE INTELLIGENCE FUNCTION, TERRORIST MANIPULATION OF THE DEMOCRATIC PROCESS, POLITICAL ASSASSINATION, AND THE QUESTION OF WHETHER THE ENDS CAN JUSTIFY THE MEANS. THE LEGAL DILEMMAS POSED BY INTERNATIONAL TERRORISM ARE OUTLINED, INCLUDING THE CONTROL OF STATE TERROR THROUGH APPLICATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN LAW OF ARMED CONFLICT, THE ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF AN INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT, DETENTE'S EFFECT ON A CONVENTION ON INTERNATIONAL CRIMES, THE LEGAL PROBLEMS OF HIJACKING AND HOSTAGE TAKING, AND PROBLEMS OF DETERRENCE. THE USE OF TERRORISM AS A MILITARY WEAPON AND THE IMPACT OF NUCLEAR TERRORISM ON THE MILITARY'S ROLE IN SOCIETY ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. AMONG HISTORICAL INCIDENTS OF TERRORISM DISCUSSED ARE THE NAZI CONCEPTS OF VIOLENCE AND TERROR AND THE MASSACRE OF THE AMERICANS. A BIBLIOGRAPHY AND INDEX ARE INCLUDED.
