Abstract
The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) provides services to both victims of online crimes and to law enforcement to address crimes committed using the Internet. Highlights from the report on Internet crimes committed in 2011 include the following: in 2011, the IC3 received over 300,000 complaints, a 3.4-percent increase from 2010; the most common victim complaints were FBI-related scams, identity theft, and advance fee fraud; the 5 States with the most victim complaints were California, Florida, Texas, New York, and Ohio; and the average amount of financial loss reported was $4,187, with victims in California reporting the highest dollar losses - over $70.5 million total. The findings in the report are presented in 10 sections: IC3 Overview, Lifecycle of a Complaint, Resources for Building Cases, Complainant Demographics, Overall Statistics, Complainant Characteristics, 2011 Frequently Reported Internet Crimes, Case Highlights, Scam Alerts, and Protecting the Public. Additional information provided in the three appendixes deals with ideas and suggestions for consumers for online crime prevention, public service announcements released in 2011 for the benefit of consumers, and summaries of complainant statistics.
