This chapter provides an overview of Internet gambling, a discussion of applicable United States laws pertaining to such gambling, and offers guidelines to conducting an investigation of online gambling.
Abstract
The author of this chapter begins his discussion of the online gambling industry by posing the question of its legality. A review of applicable United States laws governing gambling is offered. The author explains how online gambling sites are operated so that an investigator has an understanding of its structure. Two case examples of Internet gambling investigations are presented and the author notes that when gambling crimes are investigated, a plethora of other types of crimes, such as investment schemes and money laundering, tend to be uncovered as well. This chapter goes on to offer the reader specific guidelines for how to best investigate an online gambling operation, including how to target data collection and how to plan an online gambling raid.
