PROVIDES A RATIONALE FOR DEVISING A 'SOCIAL SKILLS PROGRAM' IN ENGLAND TO THERAPEUTICALLY MODIFY THE BEHAVIOR OF VIOLENT OFFENDERS.
Abstract
EXAMPLES OF RESEARCH FINDINGS ON AGGRESSION ARE GIVEN, WHICH CONCLUDE THAT THE PATTERN OF OCCURRENCE OF VIOLENT OFFENSES SUGGESTS THAT ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS ARE THE MORE IMPORTANT CAUSES OF INTERPERSONAL AGGRESSION. THE RESEARCH FURTHER ILLUSTRATES THAT VIOLENCE OCCURS WITH SOME SPECIFICITY WITHIN CERTAIN CULTURES AND IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS. THE ARTICLE EMPHASIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF GEARING A SOCIAL SKILLS PROGRAM TO SPECIFIC AGGRESSOR TYPES TO COUNTERACT THESE ADVERSE EXTERNAL FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE BEHAVIOR. SOME PRELIMINARY WORK BETWEEN THERAPISTS AND VIOLENT OFFENDERS IS DESCRIBED AND DISCUSSED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)...KAP
