PART OF THE PROFESSIONAL PROCEDURES PROGRAM SERIES, THIS INSTRUCTOR'S KIT CONTAINS ALL NECESSARY COMPONENTS FOR FAMILIARIZING POLICE TRAINEES WITH THE BASICS OF INTERROGATION.
Abstract
THE PROGRAM PROVIDES STUDENTS WITH AN OVERVIEW OF INTERROGATION OR THE QUESTIONING OF SUSPECTS AND HOSTILE WITNESSES. AN INTERROGATION CAN HAVE SEVERAL DIFFERENT OBJECTIVES, INCLUDING OBTAINING A SUSPECT'S CONFESSION, GATHERING GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT A CRIME, GETTING INVESTIGATIVE LEADS SUCH AS THE NAMES OF ACCOMPLICES, AND GETTING INFORMATION ABOUT OTHER CRIMES WHICH THE SUSPECT MAY HAVE COMMITTED OR ABOUT WHICH HE OR SHE MAY HAVE KNOWLEDGE. TO PREPARE FOR INVESTIGATIONS, OFFICERS SHOULD STUDY ALL THE INFORMATION PERTAINING TO THE CRIME AND INTERVIEW THE VICTIM, WITNESSES, AND ANYONE ELSE WHO MAY BE ABLE TO PROVIDE RELEVANT INFORMATION. THEY MUST VISIT THE CRIME SCENE, IF POSSIBLE, AND BECOME FAMILIAR WITH ALL REPORTS AND EVIDENCE PERTAINING TO THE CASE. LEARNING AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE ABOUT THE SUSPECT'S BACKGROUND, PRIOR ARREST RECORD, AND MODUS OPERANDI IS NECESSARY. PHYSICAL SETTING ALSO IS IMPORTANT. BASIC PROCEDURES TO FOLLOW IN CONDUCTING AN INTERROGATION INCLUDE MAKING PRELIMINARY ARRANGEMENTS, GETTING STARTED, GETTING THE STORY, USING TECHNIQUES FOR FILLING IN GAPS AND FOR OVERCOMING DENIALS, AND GETTING THE STATEMENT. THE KIT INCLUDES SLIDES AND ACCOMPANYING TAPE, STUDY NOTES, QUIZ QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS, AND THE INSTRUCTOR'S GUIDE. (PRG)
