SUGGESTIONS FOR PLANNING AND DELIVERING A 5-DAY INTRODUCTORY TRAINING COURSE IN THE ANALYSIS OF CRIME ARE PRESENTED IN A MANUAL DIRECTED TO TRAINING PROGRAM ADMINISTRATORS.
Abstract
THE ANALYSIS COURSE WAS DESIGNED TO INCREASE THE COMPETENCY OF STATE AND LOCAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE PLANNING AGENCY STAFF IN ANALYZING CRIME PROBLEMS WITHIN A GIVEN JURISDICTION. POTENTIAL TRAINEES INCLUDE BUDGET ANALYSTS, COMMUNITY PROGRAM COORDINATORS, DATA AND POLICY ANALYSTS, PROGRAM MONITORS, AND OTHERS IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE PLANNING POSITIONS THAT REQUIRE A BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROCESSES AND TOOLS USED IN THE ANALYSIS OF CRIME. THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO SIX MODULES: PROBLEM FORMULATION; DATA COLLECTION; DATA INTERPRETATION (CRIME); DATA INTERPRETATION (SYSTEM); IMPLEMENTATION; AND PRESENTATION OF FINDINGS. THE ADMINISTRATOR'S MANUAL COVERS THE FOLLOWING: THE PARTICIPANT POPULATION (TARGET AUDIENCE FOR THE ANALYSIS COURSE, PARTICIPANT SELECTION, PREATTENDANCE MATERIALS); STAFFING (ROLE OF THE DIRECTOR, INSTRUCTORS, AND ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF, LOGISTICS (SCHEDULING, FACILITIES); AND TRAINING EVALUATION. SUPPORTING MATERIALS INCLUDE A PARTICIPANT QUESTIONNAIRE; INSTRUCTOR COMMENT FORM; COURSE OBSERVATION FORM; PARTICIPANT MODULE EVALUATION FORM; PARTICIPANT END-OF-COURSE AND FOLLOWUP EVALUATION FORMS; AND AN ABSTRACT OF EACH MODULE.
