BASIC CONCEPTS OF CORRECTIONAL HISTORY, PHILOSOPHY, AND PRACTICES ARE EXAMINED IN READINGS DIRECTED TO UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS OF PENOLOGY AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE.
Abstract
THE DEVELOPMENT OF CORRECTIONAL PHILOSOPHY IS TRACED IN WRITINGS ON JUSTIFICATIONS FOR CRIMINAL PUNISHMENT, PENAL PRACTICES IN THE U.S., CORRECTIONS AND HUMAN DIGNITY, AND A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A PRISONER. A CHAPTER ON CORRECTIONAL THOUGHT IN TRANSITION INCLUDES DISCUSSIONS OF THE FAILURE OF CORRECTIONAL MANAGEMENT, CHANGE AND OBSTACLES TO CHANGE IN PRISON MANAGEMENT, ABANDONMENT OF THE 'NOBLE LIE' OF REHABILITATION, REASSESSMENT OF REHABILITATION, THE NECESSITY OF TREATING CRIMINAL OFFENDERS, AND FAILINGS OF REHABILITATION. PRISON PRACTICES AND CONCEPTS ARE EXAMINED IN ARTICLES ON DESIGNING CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES, A 'FUNCTIONAL UNIT' APPROACH TO CORRECTIONS, CORRECTIONAL EDUCATION, SOCIAL POLICY IMPLICATIONS OF PRISON VOCATIONAL TRAINING, WORK RELEASE, AND GRADUATED RELEASE. UNTREATABLE CRIMINALS, LIFESTYLES OF HEROIN USERS, CORRECTIONS AND THE MINORITIES, PRISONERS' WIVES AND CHILDREN, PRISON RIOTS, AND ESCAPE ARE DISCUSSED IN WRITINGS ON THE PROBLEMS AND DELEMMAS OF CORRECTIONS. DESCRIPTIONS OF PROGRAM INNOVATIONS AND EVALUATIVE RESEARCH ARE PROVIDED IN ARTICLES ON OPTIONAL PROGRAMMING, FUNCTIONAL UNITS, SERVICES TO FAMILIES OF PRISONERS, DIVERSION PROGRAMMING, COMMUNITY ALTERNATIVES TO JAIL, BARRIERS TO REHABILITATING EX-OFFENDERS, AND EVALUATIVE RESEARCH IN CORRECTIONS. EACH CHAPTER IS ACCOMPANIED BY A LIST OF DISCUSSION TOPICS. A SUMMARY IS PROVIDED OF THE STANDARDS FOR CORRECTIONS OF THE NATIONAL ADVISORY COMMISSION ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE STANDARDS AND GOALS.
