Abstract
Beginning chapters cover the logic of hypothesis testing, descriptive statistics, summary measures, and the normal distribution and standard deviations. Chapters dealing with research methods focus on sampling, experiments and quasiexperiments, survey research, data collection issues, participant observation, life histories, longitudinal research, and secondary data analysis. Chapters on data analysis pertain to x-tests, t-tests and nonparametric alternatives, analysis of variance, correlation and regression analysis, and contingency table analysis. Final chapters discuss the role of statistics and research in decisionmaking, with emphasis on statistical tests and statistical inference and reporting. Appendixes contain a table of random numbers, supplemental statistical tables, glossaries of terms and formulas, and answers to chapter exercises. A workbook accompanies the main text to help students understand relevant concepts and issues. References, tables, and figures
