The "collision" between gender consciousness and crime and social control issues is explored, and the influence of feminism on the academic discipline of criminology is assessed.
Abstract
An international and multicultural survey of feminism's effects on criminology and a historical review of 20th Century feminism and academic criminology in the western world are presented. Factors that have fostered the recent globalization of feminist criminological analyses are considered. The authors note that feminist criminological studies have multipled over the past two decades, particularly in response to domestic violence, sexual abuse, and rape. Key issues associated with gender, crime, and social control that need to be addressed over the next 25 years are identified. The focus is on evaluating the extent to which criminology and crime control policies are implicated in the construction of hierarchies based on gender, race, class, and sexuality. 46 references and 8 notes
