Abstract
An overview of private security describes the methods of protection that have evolved since ancient times, the current status of private security, and the use of risk management to prevent or reduce losses. Analysis of basic security responsibilities covers physical and environmental controls, the human factor, and security personnel and procedures to prevent or reduce losses resulting from accidents, natural disasters, violence, and emergencies. Specific problems encountered and the security systems developed for industrial security, commercial security, and retail security are described. Techniques for providing security in institutions such as hospitals, educational institutions, residences, and museums are also described. Tables, photographs, diagrams, chapter questions and reference lists, an index, and an appendix summarizing private security legislation in each State are provided.
