A broad overview of private security in its practical application is provided, and certain theoretical approaches to some of its problems are suggested.
Abstract
After considering the history and organization of security, the text details the fundamental principles of risk assessment, physical protection, systems of defense, internal security, fire prevention, emergency planning, safety, and insurance protection. Industrial security is a reference point throughout the general discussion of the security function and basics of defense. A selected sample of various industries is examined to illustrate the application of security systems, procedures, and techniques to particular problems. Included are retail security, one of the prime targets of criminal attack; hospital security, representative of the protection and loss prevention function in a public service facility or institution; cargo security, which affects virtually all businesses across the board; and computer security, which is of increasing importance to the entire business and industrial community, as well as to government. Chapters added in this edition cover the proprietary security organization, risk analysis, the security survey, fire protection, emergency planning, and career opportunities in loss prevention. The book is intended primarily as an introductory text for students interested in a career in security. A total of 74 footnotes, about 80 bibliographic listings, and a subject index are provided.
