This study investigates the association between masculinity and self-reported delinquency, and the contribution of masculinity to explaining the sex difference in delinquency.
Abstract
Both strain theory and control theory imply that masculinity and delinquency are indirectly related. There is evidence that masculinity and delinquency are weakly associated in the manner suggested by strain theory. Also, there is no support for the idea that masculinity explains the sex difference in delinquency. Alternative explanations for the sex difference are explored. (Publisher abstract)
