THIS REPORT, UNDERTAKEN AS AN ACADEMIC EXERCISE BY THE TEACHER AND STUDENTS OF A TRAINING COURSE IN COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION MANAGEMENT, DETAILS THE COSTS, TYPES AND CAUSES OF VANDALISM IN A BRITISH URBAN DISTRICT.
Abstract
THE PRIMARY AREAS OF INVESTIGATION WERE THE SEAHAM URBAN DISTRICT (POPULATION 26,000) AND THE PARISH OF EAST MURTON (POPULATION 8,500). THE METHODS USED IN THIS STUDY INCLUDED REVIEWS OF POLICE RECORDS, INTERVIEWS WITH TEACHING STAFF IN THE AREA, INTERVIEWS WITH LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, AND INTERVIEWS WITH LOCAL SOCIAL WORKERS. THE REPORT DESCRIBES THE COST OF VANDALISM IN THE SEAHAM URBAN DISTRICT, REVIEWS THE TYPES OF VANDALISM EXPERIENCED IN THIS AREA AND DISCUSSES THE TYPES OF PROPERTY THAT WERE PARTICULARLY SUBJECT TO VANDALISM. AMONG THE POSSIBLE CAUSES OF VANDALISM SUGGESTED IN THIS REPORT ARE LACK OF MORAL INSTRUCTION, LACK OF PARENTAL CONTROL, LACK OF RECREATIONAL FACILITIES, AND NEGATIVE INFLUENCE OF TELEVISION. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR DEALING WITH VANDALISM ARE INCLUDED.
