TWO POLICE FATALITIES AND ONE PERMANENT DISABILITY HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY CATASTROPHIC FAILURES OF STEEL BELTED RADIAL PLY TIRES DURING HIGH-SPEED POLICE OPERATIONS. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE GIVEN FOR TIRE SELECTION.
Abstract
MORE THAN 200 OTHER FAILURES WERE REPORTED BY ONE STATE HIGHWAY PATROL DEPARTMENT. THE REPORT RECOMMENDS THAT POLICE DEPARTMENTS USE CAUTION IN SELECTING TIRES FOR PATROL CARS AND THAT TIRE MANUFACTURERS BE REQUIRED TO PROVIDE EVIDENCE THAT THE TIRES SOLD FOR POLICE USE HAVE BEEN TESTED AND CERTIFIED AT SPEEDS OF AT LEAST 125 MILES PER HOUR. TEST RESULTS, ACCIDENT REPORTS, MANUFACTURERS' CERTIFICATIONS, AND RELATED MATERIALS ARE INCLUDED IN ATTACHMENTS.(AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
