Intended as a guide for investigators, personnel directors, and industrial relations managers who are faced with issues of drug abuse in the workplace, this text presents guidelines for identifying, confronting, and disciplining drug policy violators in both union and non-union workplaces.
Abstract
The discussion also emphasizes ways to accomplish these tasks while protecting the business from lawsuits regarding invasion of privacy and wrongful discharge. It also emphasizes the connection between employee morale and the techniques used and notes that being overzealous and failing to conduct a legally and morally sound investigation will defeat the goal of any process designed to provide a safe and productive environment for both employees and employers. In addition, employers can prevent most policy violations by properly screening prospective employees, training its employees, and providing effective supervision.
