This user's guide for Iowa's Juvenile Court Case Records, 1975-1984, presents the variable list, variable descriptions, and procedures for using the codebook.
Abstract
The Juvenile Court Case Records provide information on the chain of events that depict a juvenile's progress through the juvenile justice system from the time of referral to a Juvenile Court Office to final court disposition through the Juvenile Court Statistics system. The introduction to this user's guide for the records includes a history of Iowa's Juvenile Court Statistics, a summary of data-collection methods, publications of the records, a description of the archived data files, and terms of availability. The guidelines for using the codebook are based on a study of available documentation from the data supplier, interviews with the data supplier and court personnel, and diagnostic analyses performed by the archive staff. This section includes a reproduction of information that appears in the codebook for a typical variable. A variable list includes the following variables: court, reason for referral, referred by, prior delinquency referrals this year, prior delinquency referrals prior years, care pending disposition, age at time of referral, sex, race, manner of handling, month of disposition, year of disposition, disposition, filler, and sequence number. The codebook variable descriptions show column/width, variable number, and code value and description. Appended juvenile court statistical card and original data collector's statement of acceptance
