PROBLEMS AND METHODOLOGY OF MEASURING PUBLIC OPINION ABOUT CRIME ARE EXPLORED IN A WORKING REPORT FOR A RESEARCH PROJECT OF THE CANADIAN GROUP FOR RESEARCH ON ATTITUDES TOWARD CRIME.
Abstract
THE RESEARCH IS INTENDED TO AID PUBLIC OFFICIALS IN FORMULATING POLICY, IN IMPROVING PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING, AND IN DEVELOPING NEW RESEARCH METHODS FOR POLICY DETERMINATION, AS WELL AS TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF SCIENCE. THE PROJECT, BASED ON A FRENCH MODEL, SEEKS IN PARTICULAR TO REVEAL THE RESPONSE OF THE CANADIAN PUBLIC TO RECENT CRIMINAL REFORMS AND THE EXTENT OF THE CRISIS IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE. THE RESEARCH PROGRAM IS TO BE A COORDINATED SERIES OF LIMITED STUDIES LASTING 5 YEARS. THREE SURVEYS ARE TO BE MADE OF REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLES OF THE CANADIAN POPULATION. GUIDELINES DISCUSSED RELATE TO RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS, SAMPLING, FIELD WORK, PREPARATION OF DATA FOR ANALYSIS, AND GENERAL ORGANIZATION OF THE SURVEY. A PILOT STUDY IS RECOMMENDED TO ESTABLISH THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE PROPOSED PROJECT DESIGN. A RESEARCH CALENDAR SHOWS THE SIX RESEARCH STEPS PROPOSED FOR 1977 TO 1982. FIGURES, TABLES, BIBLIOGRAPHIES, AND APPENDIXES CONTAINING AN OVERVIEW OF RESEARCH ON COMMUNITY ATTITUDES TOWARD CRIME, A LIST OF CONSULTANTS, AND CURRICULA VITAE OF RESEARCHERS ARE INCLUDED.
