TABULATED RESULTS OF SURVEY OF EDUCATION DIRECTORS, TEACHERS, AND PUPILS IN JUVENILE CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES, WITH REVIEW OF PROBLEMS, NEW OBJECTIVES, AND PRIORITIES.
Abstract
THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN JUVENILE INSTITUTIONS IS TRACED. SURVEYS SENT TO 40 WESTERN JUVENILE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS WERE RETURNED BY 29. THE SURVEY INCLUDED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE TYPES OF PROGRAMS OFFERED, THE KINDS OF TEACHING METHODS USED, THE TRAINING AND BACKGROUND OF TEACHERS AND THEIR OPPORTUNITIES FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION, THE PRESENT ACHIEVEMENT LEVELS OF STUDENTS, AND THE CURRENT LEARNING DIFFICULTIES OF STUDENTS. RESULTS ARE TABULATED IN MANY CHARTS AND TEND TO SUPPORT THE AUTHOR'S VIEW THAT CURRENT JUVENILE CORRECTIONS EDUCATION IS STILL INEFFECTIVE. ISSUES SUCH AS THE NEED FOR CAREER EDUCATION, TEACHER RECRUITMENT AND TRAINING, AND LINKING OF INSTITUTIONAL PROGRAMS WITH THE COMMUNITY ARE DISCUSSED. NEW DIRECTIONS AND PRIORTIES SUCH AS THE ROLE SCHOOLS MIGHT PLAY IN CORRECTIONS OR COMMUNITY BASED CORRECTIONS ARE INDICATED. EXISTING INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS, WITH PERSONS TO CONTACT FOR MORE INFORMATION ARE LISTED.
