Abstract
THE AUTHOR FIRST TRACES THE HISTORY OF PROBATION AND PAROLE IN ITS COMMON LAW ROOTS BEFORE DISCUSSING EACH OF THE ISSUES. THE MISSION OF PAROLE IS SEEN AS ERRATICALLY COMPOSED OF ELEMENTS WHICH DO NOT ENJOY UNIVERSAL ACCEPTANCE OVER A SUSTAINED PERIOD OF TIME.
