Despite the publication of DES Circular 4/88 by the British government which recognizes the need for teacher training in the area of child sexual abuse identification and prevention, the measures taken by the government to provide that training appear to be inadequate.
Abstract
Surveys completed by teachers from 20 different primary and secondary schools revealed that the majority had received little, if any, training on child sexual abuse issues and most felt they were not sufficiently knowledgeable about detection of child sexual abuse, its emotional aspects, or ways to support the child and parents. Child sexual abuse prevention programs in the schools are often seriously flawed, have not been evaluated for effectiveness, and may lead to unintended negative consequences for both children and teachers. The author maintains that an effective prevention program must be nationally coordinated, centrally directed, and funded by the government. 16 references
