SIX JAIL SYSTEMS FUNDED BY THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF CORRECTIONS (NIC) TO SERVE AS JAIL AREA RESOURCE CENTERS AND THEREBY EXPAND AND STRENGTHEN NIC SERVICES AT THE STATE AND LOCAL LEVELS ARE DESCRIBED.
Abstract
THE SIX JAILS SELECTED IN A COMPETITIVE PROCESS ARE (1) THE BENTON COUNTY REGIONAL CORRECTIONS FACILITY, CORVALLIS, OREG. (2) THE BOULDER COUNTY CORRECTIONS CENTER, BOULDER, COLO. (3) THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTION AND REHABILITATION, ROCKVILLE, MD. (4) THE NEW HAVEN COMMUNITY CORRECTIONAL CENTER, NEW HAVEN, CONN. (5) THE ORLEANS PARISH CRIMINAL SHERIFF'S OFFICE, NEW ORLEANS, LA. (6) THE SOUTHEAST KANSAS REGIONAL CORRECTIONAL CENTER, FORT SCOTT, KANS. THE CENTERS PROVIDED TRAINING, TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE, AND INFORMATION TO SHERIFFS, JAIL ADMINISTRATORS, AND PROGRAM STAFF IN THEIR GEOGRAPHICAL AREAS. IN ADDITION, VISITING JAILERS FROM THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY CAN PARTICIPATE, FREE OF CHARGE, IN A 3 TO 5 DAY PROGRAM TO DEVELOP A DETAILED PLAN TO IMPROVE SERVICES AND OPERATIONS IN THEIR OWN JAILS. THEY ARE ALSO EXPECTED TO EVALUATE THE SERVICES OF THE RESOURCE CENTERS. INFORMATION ABOUT ELIGIBILITY, EXPENSES, ACTIVITIES, AND PROCEDURES IS PROVIDED, AS WELL AS BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS OF EACH CENTER, ITS PARTICULAR AREAS OF EXPERTISE, AND THE PRIMARY STATES SERVED BY EACH.
