This supervisor's guide for jail inspections is designed to facilitate interaction between the jail supervisor and the new inspector regarding topics in the self-study manual, so that the new inspector can gain maximum benefit from the "Jail Inspection Basics" training.
Abstract
The seven chapters of this supervisors guide correspond to the chapters in the self-study manual. The format for each chapter in the supervisors guide consists of a chapter overview, performance objectives and related questions/answers, and discussion topics. The chapter overview summarizes the material covered in that chapter in the new inspector's self-study manual. Although the performance objectives and questions/answers in the supervisor's guide correspond to these sections in the manual, the material is structured differently for the supervisor. The objective for each section is followed by the related questions, and each question incorporates the answer in boldface italic type. In the manual, answers are presented in a separate key at the end of each chapter. The most important part of the supervisors guide is the discussion topics at the end of each chapter. These topics are designed to help the supervisor focus the new inspector's learning on the particular needs of the agency and State. The recommended approach is to discuss each chapter as soon as the new inspector has completed it in the manual. The topics addressed in the seven chapters are legal issues, standards, the inspection process, facility design, communication, government structures and processes, and resources. Bibliographies are provided for five of the seven chapters.
