This survey provides a comprehensive view of the nature and scope of jail litigation in the United States from 1970 to 1984 and the ways in which counties, States, municipalities, and courts have responded to various problems relating to jail conditions and inmate rights.
Abstract
A State-by-State listing of cases in both State and Federal courts is provided. Each case entry provides either a court docket number or a bibliographic citation. A summary description of the proceedings and the holding also is provided. Cases involve both adult and juvenile plaintiffs. Included among the issues addressed by these cases are overcrowding, personal safety, classification, due process, privacy, staffing, recreation, search and seizure, and inmate medical and other services.
