Abstract
A section on basic issues examines the origins and development of the American jail, discusses legal rights and responsibilities within the corrections environment, and explores litigation procedures. Written communications; role concepts, attitudes, and interpersonal communications; and stress are discussed. Next, security is considered, including basic jail security principles, booking and admissions, classification of inmates, and disciplinary procedures. Also reviewed are contrabrand control, key and tool control, patrol procedures in the jail, escort of inmates, hostage incidents in the jail, and release procedures. The section on special procedures focuses on sick call, recreation and visiting, diabetic and epileptic inmates, medical problems of women inmates, and drug withdrawal in the jail. Other special procedures topics are alcohol abuse emergencies; psychological disorders, including psychopathic and neurotic personalities; homosexual behavior in the jail; and suicide prevention. The final section on supervision encompasses principles and skills, personal supervision situations in housing and general areas, special supervision problems in the jail, supervision of inmates in dining areas, and supervision of minimum-security inmates. Case histories highlight the main ideas. Each chapter ends with multiple-choice questions, and drawings and photographs complement the text.
