A comprehensive training program for correctional officers was developed to meet the specific training needs of personnel at the Weld County Sheriff's Jail in Colorado.
Abstract
The program for correctional officer development is divided into two categories: preservice training and on the job training. Preservice training consists of participation in an 80-hour orientation academy for detention officer training particularly geared for the Weld County Jail. Topics covered include goals of the Sheriff's Jail Department; principles of direct supervision; constitutional rights versus privileges of inmates; interpersonal communication skills; pressure point control tactics; communication systems in the organization; emergency procedures; and inmate admissions, release, and court procedures. Following the academy, officers complete a 6-month on-the-job training, suicide prevention training, and the National Sheriff's Association Correspondence Course. Each year thereafter, the officers attend 40 hours of advance training update. Also the officers may earn college credit through the collaboration of the Sheriff's Office and Aims.
