THIS DOCUMENT IS AN ENGLISH SUMMARY OF A LONGER VOLUME, PREPARED TO ACQUAINT OVERSEAS READERS WITH CRIMINOLOGICAL RESEARCH ACTIVITIES IN JAPAN. EIGHT STUDIES AND AN OPINION PAPER ARE INCLUDED.
Abstract
A STUDY ON CRIMES OF BRIBERY COVERS BOTH THE OFFERING AND ACCEPTING OF A BRIBE, WITH DISCUSSIONS OF THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN JAPANESE AND OTHER LEGAL SYSTEMS IN PROSECUTING AND PUNISHING BRIBERY, A STATISTICAL PROFILE OF THE CRIMES, AND PARTICULAR JAPANESE PROBLEMS WITH DEALING WITH BRIBERY. A THIRD REPORT ON TREATMENT OF YOUNG ADULT HABITUAL CRIMINALS FINDS THEM CLASSIFIABLE INTO FIVE CATEGORIES BASED ON PERSONALITY TRAITS AND BEHAVIOR AND RECOMMENDS TREATMENT STRATEGIES FOR EACH TYPE. A SECOND REPORT ON DIFFERENTIAL TREATMENT OF JUVENILE DELINQUENTS BASED ON A 30 ITEM TEST OF ABOUT 2500 JUVENILE DELINQUENTS FOUND NINE SUBTYPES WITH A VERY DIFFERENT DISTRIBUTION THAN THAT FOUND IN SIMILAR AMERICAN STUDIES AND STRONG FACTOR CORRELATIONS WITH INTELLIGENCE AND MATURITY. A STUDY OF THE USE OF PSYCHODRAMA TO TREAT JUVENILE DELINQUENTS FOUND THE BEST RESPONSE AMONG SERIOUS BUT NOT FREQUENT SEX OFFENDERS WITH INTELLIGENCE QUOTIENTS OF 49 TO 80. THE SUBJECTS OF THE STUDY WERE MOSTLY FEEBLE-MINDED. A THIRD REPORT ON DELINQUENCY AND PERSONALITY TRAITS BASED ON ABOUT 2200 SUBJECTS FOUND MONEY-SEEKING, PLEASURE-SEEKING, AND TRADITIONAL VALUE-ORIENTATION TO BE TRAITS CORRELATING WITH PROPERTY OFFENSES AND VIOLENT CRIMES. THE TRAIT MOST CORRELATING WITH DELINQUENCY IS NEUROTIC TENDENCY. A STUDY OF RECIDIVISM IN LARCENY FOLLOWING UP A STUDY CONDUCTED IN 1961 ON 500 SUBJECTS SUPPORTED THE ACCELERATIVE EVOLUTION CONCEPT FOLLOWING FROM THE POLYA-EGGENBERGER DISTRIBUTION. A STUDY OF 333 JAPANESE RAPE CASES NOT COMPLICATED WITH OTHER CRIMES, USING OFFICIAL RESEARCH CARDS FILLED OUT BY PUBLIC OFFICIALS, FOUND A SURFACE SIMILARITY TO THE U.S. STATISTICS IN THAT RAPE IS USUALLY COMMITTED INDOORS AFTER MIDNIGHT AGAINST ACQUAINTANCES BY SINGLE INDIVIDUALS. A PROFILE OF 453 SUSPECTED STIMULANT DRUG OFFENDERS AND ALLEGED OFFENSES COMPARES 418 GANGSTER AND 418 NONGANGSTER OFFENDERS IN CATEGORIES OF PERSONAL DATA, TYPE OF OFFENSE, AND PRIOR RECORDS. THE OPINION PAPER ANTICIPATES SOCIAL CHANGE AND A HIGH PROPORTION OF PERSONS UNDER 21 YEARS OF AGE TO MAKE THE CONTROL OF JUVENILE AND YOUTH CRIME NOT MERELY SERIOUS BUT URGENT IN MUCH OF THE ASIAN REGION. TABLES ARE INCLUDED. (TWB)
