This journal issue contains three articles: one on drug abuse and partner violence among women in methadone treatment, another on predictors of intimate violence in Chinese-American families, and the third one on same-sex relationship violence in a diverse sample.
Abstract
The study of drug abuse and partner violence investigated rates of lifetime and current partner abuse among women on methadone; examined the relationship between partner violence and demographics, substance abuse, and drug risk behaviors; and explored the association between current use of crack-cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and drug risk behavior after controlling for demographics, household composition, history of victimization, and sex trading. About 75 percent of the women experienced physical, sexual, or life-threatening abuse. Risk of partner violence was associated with the victim's current drug and alcohol use and living with someone who had drug or alcohol problems. A study of Chinese-American families involved 133 males and 129 females selected from the Los Angeles County telephone directory. Telephone interviews showed that gender role beliefs were not related to physical intimate violence but that acculturation significantly predicted severe physical violence. A study of same-sex relationship violence was based on a sample of 499 ethically diverse gay men, lesbians, and bisexual and trans-gendered people. Findings indicated physical violence was reported in 9 percent of current and 32 percent of past relationships. Emotional abuse was reported by 83 percent of participants. Women reported higher frequencies than men for physical abuse, coercion, shame, threats, and use of children for control. References, tables, and figures
