This interview with the sociologist Robert Straus focuses on his 40-year career as a researcher in alcohol abuse and alcohol-related issues.
Abstract
Early in his career Professor Straus studied health care issues, thus leading him to future studies on alcoholism, vagrancy, and homelessness. Additionally, he has studied drinking attitudes and practices of college students in the United States as well as drinking attitudes of various ethnic groups in America. He has also helped to establish the medical school and medical center at the University of Kentucky, to participate in the creation of Federal alcohol abuse legislation and programs, and to study alcohol abuse from a biobehavioral perspective. Dr. Straus believes that future research on alcohol abuse should stress the processes of prevention and treatment. 17 references.
