This manual is intended as a quick reference for journalists regarding Federal criminal procedure and can be used alone or as part of a seminar for which a video tape and seminar planning guide have also been created.
Abstract
The information focuses on the procedures used rather than the individual crimes that can be tried in Federal court. Individual sections summarize the investigatory stage, the grand jury and indictments, arraignment and bond, motions to suppress, and plea bargaining. Further sections focus on discovery, access to the trial, jury selection, opening statements, witnesses and evidence, and closing arguments. Other sections explain jury instructions, the verdict and sentencing, and appeals. The text notes that procedures in State courts share many of the basic principles that guide the Federal judiciary, although they differ in each jurisdiction. Glossary of selected legal terms.
