Abstract
A discussion of the life of a judge addresses the unique role and environment of the trial judge, the qualities of a judge, the judge's family, the integration of women and minorities into the American judiciary, avoidance of race and gender bias in the courtroom, and stress management and health. A review of the judge's work focuses on alternative dispute resolution, court management and delay reduction, pretrial and settlement proceedings, trial by jury, and trial by court. Techniques of judging encompass listening, note taking, decisionmaking, discretion, and courtroom control. Aspects of the profession of judging cover ethics for judges, the judge and the communities, satisfactions of judging, the judge of the future, and judicial education.
