A COMPILATION OF GRAND AND PETIT JUROR UTILIZATION STATISTICS DERIVED FROM MONTHLY REPORTS PRESENTED BY EACH DISTRICT COURT IN THE UNITED STATES DURING FISCAL 1975 ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
PETIT JUROR STATISTICS FOR 1971 THROUGH 1974 ARE ALSO PROVIDED FOR COMPARISON PURPOSES. IN SECTION 1, JUROR UTILIZATION DATA ARE PRESENTED IN EXTENSIVE TABLES AND ACCOMPANING TEXT. INFORMATION INCLUDES GRAND JURY OPERATION IN THE FEDERAL COURTS. A NATIONAL OVERVIEW OF PETIT JURY ACTIVITY, DISTRICT-BY-DISTRICT PETIT JUROR UTILIZATION FROM FISCAL 1971 THROUGH FISCAL 1975. SECTION 2 DEALS WITH JUROR EXPENDITURES FOR EACH DISTRICT COURT, AS WELL AS NATIONAL FIGURES FOR JUROR COSTS, AND EXPENDITURES FOR PETIT JURY OPERATION. A METHOD FOR CALCULATING COST AVOIDANCE OR COST COVERAGE FOR EACH DISTRICT IS ALSO DISCUSSED. FINALLY, SECTION 3 PRESENTS INDIVIDUAL PROFILE PAGES FOR EACH OF THE 94 DISTRICTS. THE GRAND JURY USAGE PROFILE INFORMATION PROVIDES SUMMARY DATA FOR THE YEAR ON ALL GRAND JURY ACTIVITY WITHIN EACH DISTRICT. PETIT JUROR UTILIZATION PROFILES FOR EACH DISTRICT ALSO PROVIDE COMPARISON DATA. THE TWO PROFILES FOR EACH DISTRICT ARE DESIGNED TO PROVIDE AN OVERALL PICTURE OF THE DISTRICT JURY SYSTEMS AND THEIR OPERATIONS IN SOME CASES COMMENTS ARE APPENDED TO DISTRICT PROFILES WHICH ELUCIDATE UNUSUAL OCCURRENCES, AND LOCAL CIRCUMSTANCES OR PRACTICES WHICH AFFECT DISTRICT STATISTICS. TWO NATIONAL PROFILE PAGES ARE PROVIDED TO PERMIT ASSESSMENT OF DISTRICT PERFORMANCE WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF THE FEDERAL COURT SYSTEM AS A WHOLE. ALSO PROVIDED ARE LISTINGS OF OFFICE NAMES AND NUMBERS OF DISTRICTS HAVING GRAND JURY ACTIVITY, AND DISTRICT COURTS WHICH HAVE ADOPTED RULES REDUCING THE SIZE OF CIVIL JURIES. (JAP)
