Abstract
Juror utilization data in various summary tables and accompanying text are presented. Information on juror expenditures for each district court as well as national figures are then specified. Finally, individual profile pages for each of the 95 districts are provided. Each utilization profile gives historical comparison data for a 5-year period in selected areas. The profile data for each district illustrate pertinent juror statistics for fiscal year 1980 in a format that provides an overall picture of the jury system and of the efficient or inefficient operation of that system. During the year grand jury activity increased substantially. The total number of grand jury sessions convened increased 5.6 percent, from 9,791 sessions in 1979 to 10,338 sessions in 1980. The total number of jurors in session also increased by 6.4 percent or 12,459 jurors. The number of hours in session rose to 54,163, a 6.4 percent increase over the 1979 figure. A total of 605,547 jurors were available during the year for petit juries. The juror usage index, used to gauge the efficiency of juror usage, is the average number of jurors available for each jury trial day. The index for 43 of 91 districts has shown improvement when 1980 data are compared with 1974 figures. Extensive tables constitute the bulk of the report. Appendixes present a glossary, a summary table, and additional information.
