This podcast episode features a discussion of efforts by COSSUP grantees in Nevada to address the needs of justice-involved individuals with substance use disorder; the podcasters discuss two programs, the Mobile Outreach Safety Teams and Forensic Assessment Service Triage Teams, what they are, and how they work.
In this episode, Just Science host, Dr. Lawrence Mullen, from the National Institute of Justice’s Forensic Technology Center of Excellence, talks with D.J. Mills and doctors Terry Kerns and Katie Snider, about the Mobile Outreach Safety Teams (MOST) and Forensic Assessment Service Triage Teams (FASTT), which are programs designed to address mental health and the drug crisis in rural regions of Nevada. The programs help bridge the gaps between law enforcement and social services for justice-involved individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) through both the pre-arrest and post-arrest opportunities for intervention. The three guests discuss how MOST and FASTT operate, the state and local impacts of those programs, and how COSSUP grantees have overcome program implementation barriers.
