Abstract
HISTORICAL INSIGHT AND TIMELY INQUIRY INTO REAL-LIFE SITUATIONS ARE INTERWOVEN WITH PERSONAL ACCOUNTS BY PEOPLE RANGING FROM FORMER FBI DIRECTOR CLARENCE KELLEY TO CHARLES MANSON, THE CONVICTED MASS MURDERER. PART 1 EXAMINES OUR CHANGING DEFINITIONS OF CRIME WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF THE CONFORMITY AND BEHAVIOR THAT OUR SOCIETY DEMANDS. CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO THE QUESTION OF WHETHER OUR LAWS SHOULD REFLECTED WHAT GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS PERCEIVE AS THE IDEAL MORALITY OR WHETHER THEY SHOULD REFLECT THE BELIEFS AND ACTUAL BEHAVIOR OF PEOPLE. PART 2 ANALYZES SOME CRIME CAUSES AND THE BREAKDOWN OF CONFORMITY TO CONVENTIONAL STANDARDS. PART 3 EXPLORES THE ROLE OF THE COURTS IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, FROM ARREST TO SENTENCING. FINALLY, PART 4 INVESTIGATES THE TROUBLED PRISON SYSTEM AND THE QUESTIONS OF WHETHER THE GOAL OF REHABILITATION IS UNREALISTIC AND WHETHER NEW APPROACHES TO THE PROBLEM OF DEALING WITH CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR ARE NEEDED. THE KIT CONTAINS 4 COLOR FILMSTRIPS, 4 AUDIO CASSETTES, A TEACHERS GUIDE, A SEPARATE FILMSTRIP TEACHER'S GUIDE, 37 DUPLICATING MASTERS AND 12 VISUALS FOR PREPARING TRANSPARENCIES, AND A LIBRARY CATALOG KIT. FOR SEPARATE SECTIONS OF THE KIT, SEE NCJ 66621-24. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED--PRG)
