This report summarizes findings from a study of the National Task Force on Court Automation and Integration, which was established in 1997 to develop a strategic blueprint to guide court agencies in the acquisition, implementation, and integration of court automated information systems.
Abstract
The Task Force was formed in connection with the Court Information Systems Technical Assistance Project, a joint effort of SEARCH, The National Consortium for Justice Information and Statistics, and the Bureau of Justice Assistance. The Task Force conducted extensive discussions and deliberations, augmented by a survey sent to more than 150 court administrators and information services managers to determine the status and direction of court automation and integration throughout the Nation. From these activities, findings and recommended strategies have been compiled in the forthcoming "Report of the National Task Force on Court Automation and Integration," which court system administrators can use to guide automation and integration projects in their jurisdictions. The findings outlined in this summary paper focus on the benefits of State and county integrated systems, driving forces for integration, barriers to integration, strategic planning, daily information sharing, State-level agencies, security measures, coordinated funding, and information-sharing standards. Recommended integration strategies are intended for agencies that are considering or currently administering court automation and/or integration projects. The strategies summarized in this report are in the areas of organization, standards, funding, and resources.
