Abstract
This 40-minute video from C-SPAN contains remarks by U.S. Attorney General (AG) Janet Reno to the Young Lawyers Division of the American Bar Association on developing programs for children to teach them about conflict resolution. AG Reno notes that teaching successful conflict resolution to children is an issue that needs to be addressed before the children enter adolescence. She cites successful community programs in Boston, MA, that have been developed to work with children who are witnesses to violence and who are at risk of becoming involved in drugs and gangs. She notes that the time between 0 and 3-years old is an important time in a child's life for learning about how to deal with problems and that the lack of extended families in many communities, especially poor communities, can affect children's ability to learn during this time period. During her presentation, AG Reno stresses the need for communities to develop programs for children to learn successful strategies for conflict resolution and how to handle the problems that come from being a witness to violence.
