This press release by the U.S. Department of Justice announces grants to six communities for the implementation of the "SafeFutures" program.
Abstract
The six communities are Contra Costa County, Calif.; Imperial County, Calif.; Boston, Mass.; St. Louis, Mo.; Seattle, Wash.; and the Fort Belknap Indian Community in Harlem, Mont. These communities will share almost $8 million in grants to combat juvenile crime and delinquency. The SafeFutures program combines efforts such as communitywide gang strategies; juvenile justice interventions for juvenile offenders; and prevention programming that includes afterschool, mentoring, and family strengthening programs. Overall, the program will target at-risk and delinquent youth throughout their development. OJJDP combined previously separate programs into components of the comprehensive SafeFutures initiative. These programs included those designed for at-risk youth, such as afterschool programs, job training, mentoring, and family support programs, as well as those designed for juvenile offenders, such as graduated sanctions, drug treatment, aftercare, and victim restitution. The six SafeFutures communities have already made progress in bringing together many elements to form an effective response to juvenile crime and delinquency. SafeFutures will help these communities expand their efforts and thus serve as models for other communities.
