The data were compiled by the U.S. Bureau of the Census for the Bureau of Justice Statistics using existing sources and data from the Census Bureau's 1983 sample surveys of government finance and employment. Data in this report are preliminary and subject to change. Data for fiscal 1983 address the percent of total direct government expenditures for justice activities by government level, justice system expenditures by government level, and the distribution of justice system direct expenditures by activity and government level. State and local justice system expenditures are presented by activity and State, and State and local justice system per capita expenditures are presented by State. The percent of State and local total direct expenditures for justice activities are also presented by State. Employment data are for October 1983. They encompass State and local justice system full-time equivalent employment by activity and State, employment and payrolls by activity and government level, distribution of total employment and payrolls by distribution of total employment and payrolls by activity and government level, and State and local justice system full-time equivalent employment per 10,000 population by State. 10 tables and 8 suggested readings.
