The text details the survey methodology, data sources and limitations, and significant differences between the 1971-79, 1985, and 1988 Bureau of Justice Statistics Survey of Criminal and Civil Justice Expenditure and Employment and the Justice Expenditure and Employment Extracts series. Data tables consist of Section I which presents 1980-86 trend data; Section II which presents 1986 expenditure and employment data; Section III which contains data for 1985; and Section IV which provides data for 1984. In sections II-IV, tables show national estimates by level of government and type of justice activity; State and local estimates by government level, type of justice activity, and State; and individual governmental functional detail for State governments, 68 large counties, and 49 large cities. Sections II-IV conclude with tables that present supplemental information for State and local governments displayed in earlier tables. Data include total and per capita State personal income, three categories of government expenditure (total expenditure, direct expenditure only, and total general expenditure), and two categories of full-time equivalent employment (all functions and general functions only).
